For elopement and family photographers, the fall season is typically our busiest and in the past, this has always been true for me. This year, I knew even before it actually started that not only would it be true, it would probably be my busiest yet. Because my birthday has always signaled the end of summer and the beginning of fall for me (I'm an end of August baby), I decided that I really wanted to take some time this year to get off the grid—-something relaxing. So for my birthday weekend, we planned an epic camping trip to the Eastern Sierras with the kiddos and our friends, Tatiana and Montana.
I had been trying to get Tatiana and Montana in front of my camera for some time and when we planned this trip, it was finally the perfect opportunity. Not only was it good timing for everyone, it was the perfect location! Yes, Alabama Hills, just down the road from the Mt. Whitney Portal, is a stunningly gorgeous location for a session; however, what made it perfect was that this adventurous duo had summited Mt. Whitney together just one year prior. They loved the idea of having Mt. Whitney in the background of their photos, a reminder of the awesome thing they had accomplished together.
After a long day of hiking, we were all excited to be shooting at a location where we didn’t have to do much besides drive right to the spot we were going to be taking photos. That’s right—-Alabama Hills is great for couples looking for epic views without having to do any hiking at all. When we started their session, we had tons of bright, golden sunlight to play with, creating fun shadows on the rocks around us. Shortly after, the sun dipped behind the mountains and created a softer, more romantic light. Tatiana and Montana had fun exploring the giant rock formations together and soaking up the warmth of that summer evening in the mountains. Lots of laughs were had amongst us and we ended their session with a couple beers that they shotgunned, resulting in some seriously epic (and hilarious) photos.
After a few last photos at Alabama Hills, we headed back to our campsite where I decided to break out my camera for a few final shots of Tatiana and Montana enjoying some brews by the campfire. As we sat there, enjoying the fire and the incredible night sky around us, I knew it was the perfect ending to their session and the best birthday I could have asked for.
