Romantic Moab Engagement Session

Engagement Session in Moab, UT

Canyonlands + Arches + Dead Horse Point SP | Summit and Sur Photography

Megan and Matt reached out last spring in search of a wedding and engagement photographer. Of course, when we got to chatting on a call, I had to heartbreakingly tell them that I don't work big traditional weddings but that I could potentially help them find someone in Cabo San Lucas, where they were thinking of getting married. They mentioned that even with that being the case, they still were interested in hiring me for an engagement session. Already knowing how adventurous these two were from their initial inquiry and the first few minutes on the phone, I let them know that I was headed to Moab, Utah later in the spring and if they would be interested in going out there for their engagement session. After a little bit of thought, they texted me to let me know that they were in and we were headed to Utah!

I spent weeks preparing for their session, making sure we didn't need permits for any of the locations we were planning on hanging out including Canyonlands National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park, and Arches National Park. When I arrived in Utah a few days before Megan and Matt, I drove around with my husband and kiddos scouting the locations I had found on Google Earth and making sure they would work. It was truly a labor of love and honestly, not a part of the job I would ever complain about. Hiking and driving to see gorgeous place...count me in!

It all came together when we met up in Canyonlands a few hours before sunset and they got to take in all that Moab has to offer. To get everyone loose and having fun, I played some music just loud enough for us to hear (Such Great Heights from The Postal Service, in case you were wondering) and we got to exploring the overlooks and canyons that stretched as far as the eye can see.

As the sun began to set further, we headed over to Dead Horse Point State Park for some even more incredible views of the red rock canyons surrounding us. Megan and Matt had an outfit change so this was the perfect time to switch it up. They danced, laughed, twirled, explored, and even scrambled over rocks, becoming intimately familiar with the surrounding canyon. Once the sun dipped behind the canyon and we headed into blue hour, we made sure to get a few shots with Matt's blanket that his great aunt made herself. Once we were done for the evening, we agreed to meet back up the next morning at Arches for their final look!

The next morning we met up in Arches National Park at sunrise for the prettiest view of the incredible rock formations that inhabit the park. As one of the busiest national parks in the country, getting here early for sessions is incredibly important because by 8am, the park is often past capacity and they will block off entry. Aside from that, it is always nice to have a little more space to create and not have to worry about working around a million people.

Even with the early wake up call, Megan and Matt showed up sipping coffee and looking like a million bucks! We walked up the trail and explored the area a bit together, enjoying the warmth of the rising sun. It was a beautiful morning and after a bit, we said our goodbyes and I let them know how excited I was to start working on their photos. The best news: they let me know that they were now considering eloping in Yosemite National Park and wanted to know if I would be interested and available. But, that's a story for another time!
